When pundits and politicians speak of our nation's "Founding Fathers" you may immediately recall the names of George Washington, James Madison, and Benjamin Franklin. Do you remember they are also discussing our own William Blount?
Blount was one of only a handful of men to sign the Constitution, and he was the only one to move outside of the 13 original states to actively and personally take part in America's westward expansion.
Blount Mansion's importance to US history, its Big Stories, earned it the designation National Historic Landmark. The scandal, rumors, and bankruptcy that swirled around the Mansion make its stories more interesting. And telling those stories to local residents, to schoolchildren, and to visitors keeps alive an era of our history when Independence was won, but our survival as a nation was not assured. Telling these stories, in the place where Blount stood, walked, and lived is far more powerful than any tourist attraction.
We owe our predecessors in the Blount Mansion Association a debt of gratitude for saving this treasure for us. And, we bear a burden of responsibility to preserve this legacy for the future, to pass along the history and stories that transform a house into a landmark.
